Ahsoka Season 1 Episode 3 - Time to Fly

A short, roughly 30 minute episode marks episode 3 of 8 total episodes. This is the best Sci-Fi we have until the writers strike and screen actors guild strike ends.

The episode opens with Saben in the throes of training showing her rust. Concurrently, General Syndulla is frustratingly trying to obtain approval from Chancellor Mothma and some senators for resources to track down and further investigate who was behind the ship factory but is met with opposition. She informs Ahsoka and Sabine that she will not be able to accompany them to the Denab System, specifically Seatos where Morgan Elsbeth, Baylan Skoll, Shin Hati and Marrok currently are. Orbiting Seatos is a nearly complete hyperjump ring which presumably will allow them to jump to where Grand Admiral Thrawn is assumed to be located. When Ahsoka and Sabine arrive, they are met with two squadron of fighter craft and engage in a dogfight. They manage to destroy most of the squadrons but are fired upon by the hyperdrive ring and touch down on the planet to make repairs. Combat droids are sent after them as the show ends in a minor cliffhanger.

Analysis

What I truly appreciate about this episode and series so far is the complementary use of light sabers whenever possible as well as the tip of the hat to other star wars. Sabine is not some crazy overpowered force wielding caricature but a relatable person with normal abilities. The series seems to underscore the new republic as a very inept and under-resourced entity.

Trivia

The episode opens with Sabine Wren in the midst of her training and throws an homage to the movie Star Wars a New Hope.

Characters of interest in this episode

Commander Sabine Wren- Ahsoka Tano's former mandalorian and apprentice. As of the last episode the current apprentice, she shows impatience but ingenuity and persistence. Has similar character to Luke in "A New Hope"
Huyang, strangely plays friendly antagonist similar to Yoda's role in the original trilogy. Stating that the original Jedi order would not have accepted Sabine. This is a theme throughout most of the Star Wars movies.
General Hera Syndulla - exists in this episode only to show frustration with the new order and inability to help Sabine and Ahsoka
Jacen - a human child in the care of Syndulla, he refers to her as Mom and states he wants to be a Jedi.
Baylan Skoll, does not have a major role in this episode. He sends the droids to search for Ahsoka and Sabine in the forests of Seatos.
Shin Hati - apprentice of Baylan Skoll, her role in this episode is to lead the fighter squadrons and track down Ahsoka and Sabine.
Marrok - a third shadowy and masked figure who serves as Shin Hati's sidekick in the fighter squadron attack
Morgan Elsbeth - witch of Nightsisters of Dathomir. Her role in this episode is to fire the lasers on the giant hypering towards Ahsoka's ship.
