Currently on my Mexican food kick as I try my second Mexican restaurant in Homestead, Casita Tejas on Krome Ave. This family run restaurant is well located across from the Seminole Theatre with a nice window view. It is heart warming to see a cottage industry of restaurants spring up in the past twenty years and I only anticipate the area to increase in choices.
The inside of the restaurant is bright, colorful and warm with Mexican music playing the whole time. I came on an evening during rush hour and it was plenty busy with lots of people coming in for take out meals. The window seat I had showed a bustling town winding down with people heading home.I had two appetizers and a main course, trying to pick a sampler at each restaurant I go, I was lucky to find the Fiesta Sampler on their menu, consisting of cheese quesadillas, two chicken flautas, tamal, ground beef taco, sour cream, guacamole and cheese dip. I had to try a dish I'd only see here and luckily I saw the "Mexican bullets" appetizer, described in the menu as jalapenos loaded with beef, chicken or cheese. I opted for one beef and one chicken. However I am not sure I received stuffed jalapenos so much as stuffed poblanos. Not that I am complaining since a poblano is typically 5-8x bigger than a jalapeno in terms of volume. The chips and salsa were thicker than store bought but not toot thick, probably the thickness and strength of combining two Doritos chips together. The salsa was good. I am easy to impress when it comes to chips and salsa. The star of the show, however was the Steak Fajitas which they write on their menu as their "claim to fame." This dish presents with steak marinated and seasoned with their secret recipe and grilled with onions. It is served with refried beans, guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo and four tortillas. Corn tortillas in my case, however the choice is given for flour tortillas as well.
On my next trip, I would gladly order the steak fajitas again or the shrimp tacos. However I'd probably try one of their nacho dishes or queso fundido dip with chorizo for an appetizer. Overall, a satisfying meal.
