Los Felix in Coconut Grove

When you want a Michelin star meal and want to get away from the truffles and the caviar that are in so many fine dining dishes, Los Felix offers a corn or maize forward menu with offerings of the day's catch. No chef's tasting menu at this place, but the serving staff will recommend items for you based on any preferences.  What I particularly like about this restaurant is its ambiance as well as the earnestness of the staff. There is no air of pretentiousness and no formal dress code. As such, I was sitting at dinner in the heart of Coconut Grove while people sitting next to me at one table wearing business casual and on the other table next to me in shorts and sandals. Truly the Miami I grew up and not the modern stereotype of over the top flash.

Inside

Elegant, comfortable and inviting.

Table food

Popcorn from "Yellow Dynamite" corn seasoned with coriander, vinegar powder and chipotle sauce.

Three different types of Salsa:

Snapper Crudo

The Catch of the day Crudo is made depending on which fish is available that day. Today was the Snapper served with guanabana, pickled pineapple, avocado, lime caviar and home made roasted corn oil

Corn Dumplings

Short rib from grassfed cattle, season with tamarind, the dumplings are made completely of corn and served with pickled baby leeks. The dumplings resemble gnocchi to me. I loved this dish and really liked the use of corn in it.

Grilled Black Grouper

The grilled "catch of the day" dish changes based on what is available that day as well. The dish comes with 4 corn tortillas which were very fresh and flavorful, much better than flour tortillas. The fish is grilled in a banana leaf served with cherry tomatoes, pickled red onions, sprouts, and a top oyster leaves and with hazelnut emulsion.

Mango Granita

Fresh cut mangos with coconut and key lime zest, mango ice cream with hibiscus merengue to top
