Silo Season 1, Episode 1 and 2 - Freedom's Day and Holston's Pick

We do not know why we are here. We do not know who built the silo. We do not know why everything outside the silo is as it is. We do not know when it will be safe to go outside. We all know that day is not today.

This is the new sci-fi post-apocalyptic show from Apple TV that is set in an underground silo. It appears they have been there in an underground shelter that extends hundreds of levels deep for at least 140 or so years.  The first two episodes set the premise of a society that exists with protective rules that intensely prohibit digging into the origins or past of the silo itself as well as conjecture of outside the silo. It has allusions to Plato's Allegory of the cave and hypothetical of an outside reality not experienced and only shown through a single camera lens. It is suggestive of a society that is so controlled that even freedom to procreate and reproduce is only an illusion and it is all wrapped in the setting of a murder/suicide mystery thriller.

Technology of the show appears to be from the 1980s, old style macintosh computers with the old style mouses of that era. Mechanical hard drives in today's age are now considered yesterday's technology with rust on them in favor of solid state drives that the viewer would be familiar.

One thing that is apparent is that the image that is shown to those inside is different than the one that is in fact, outside. 

The show ends on a cliffhanger as the protagonist, Juliette the engineer handles on a rope. What remains to be seen over the next 8 episodes?

What is Freedom Day?

Freedom day, celebrated 6 minutes, 6 seconds past 6 o'clock to commemorate Freedom regained from rebels when the rebellion was stopped 120 years ago. The rebels were believed to have tried to force open the doors. As part of the rebellion, the rebels were believed to have destroyed all computer drives, deleted files and burned as many books as they could. The forebearers had stopped the rebels and prevented them from opening the doors which would have likely caused death for the Silo inhabitants. As part of Freedom Day, the whole Silo is decorated and children's plays are re-enacted. As part of the festivities there is cheers, horns blown and silence in unison. Finally lanterns are lit and sent as the whole of the Silo sings.
