Silo Season 2 Episode 5 - Descent
There are a lot of actions scenes this episode but otherwise not much seems to happen. However, there are some subtle character exposition revisited. Sims does show remorse, regret and frustration after being promoted (demoted?) to Judge. His wife goes out of her way to help Knox and Shirley escape, reinforcing her actions in season 1 when she helped Jules escape with the hard drive. Jules left forearm wound was sustained during her fall in episode 10. The bacterial infection could have occured at any time from when it was originally wrapped, to when she took her cleaning suit off in silo17 to when she fell in the water. Regardless, she needs Solo now, for antibiotics and for food. The show ends with Knox and Shirley using a metal cable to drop to the lower levels where they are saved. Additionally, Jules finds her helmet but is overtaken with a bacterial illness. Solo seems to be more than he appears and may not even be Solo.
Lukas returns for the second episode in a row, his purpose to put together the hard drive. Will there be more for him to do? It is unclear why Sandy is back in the show,
Patrick Kennedy appears to have some juicy information to share, I wonder if there will be more that we dont already know.
While up until now, the story with Jules and Solo has been developed and with her in Silo17. It is not clear if and when she will leave Silo17 as Solo would like her to try to solve the rising water levels in the Silo17 before she leaves.
Silo18 has been a powder keg this whole season with rising tensions and a potential rebellion brewing. Mayor Bernard Holland seems to be both instigating it and worried about it, but he is ever faithful to the Order and following it to a tee.
This episode ends with Jules getting everything she needs to build a new suit to return to Silo18 but falling sick and with Knox and Shirley making it back to the down deep. It appears Walk is making it there too, but it is unclear what is to become of Carla.
Trivia
- Barricade is on floor 130, it is later knocked down and there is more graffiti on it.
- Trina Samuels is Solo's girlfriend
- Cole Myers, is the IT Shadow
- The hard drive appears to be damaged beyond repair but for the sake the story I will accept that it was repaired.
Characters of interest this episode
Jules Nichols - Originally from Silo18, she is currently in Silo17. She spends most of this episode trying to find the helmet for her new cleaning suit, eventually finds it but is overtaken by a bacterial illness.
Solo - has been through major trauma as well as been isolated for (decades?). He was the shadow of Russell in Silo18, the head of IT. There is a suggestion he may be unstable and not who he claims to be.
Bernard Holland - He is head of IT and has been acting Mayor since the suspicious death of the former Mayor Jahns. He murders Judge Meadows and appears to be frustrated and losing control over the Silo.
Judge Mary Meadows - Alcoholic, shows she knows a lot about the previous outside world including the existence of the solar system.
Robert Sims - Is begrudgingly promoted to be Judge. He appears to be in a helpless role now.
Dr. Pete Nichols - Briefly in this episode. Jules's father continues to be the caring father figure type as a physician caring for the newborn. He is being watched by IT just in case... He is increasingly disenchanted with the Silo and refuses to spend extra time helping Mayor Holland.
Patrick Kennedy - Was convinced by Judicial to throw a molotov cocktail to the deputy sheriff office and appeared to be murdered. He was taken the morgue but then his body is missing. He is later found by Billings and Hank. After a small discussion with Billings where he is shown the page from Jules's red level relic book, he begins to trust Billings.
Knox - strange leader in mechanical, will he and Shirley lead the revolution? Is framed in the murder of Judge Meadows. Spends most of the episode running for an angry upper level mobs trying to get back to the down deep.
Shirley Campbell - has been angry about Jules's leaving the Silo and is willing to lead a rebellion. She spends most of this episode trying to get back down to mechanical with Knox.
Sheriff Paul Billings - a person with "the syndrome" is another figurehead, similar to Judge Meadows. He knows the Pact forwards and backwards and is keenly aware of everything not adding up. Especially as his powers have been stripped from him as the Deputies answer to IT now. He confesses to Judge Meadows that he has the syndrome and that he has doubts that Jules had said she wanted to go outside.
Walker - part of the four that ascend the stairs to speak to Judge Meadows. Significant because she previously never left her workshop and now does.
Carla - part of the four that ascend the stairs to speak with Judge Meadows, she works in supply and had the "good tape" that saved Jules. She was caught this episode, willingly, so that the others may make it.
Unanswered Questions
- Who is Salvador Quinn and what is the significance of his letter? It must be important for Judge Meadows to mention it and say she cant tell him and for half of it to be in code.
- Who is the wheelchair guy that can make weapons and what is the second request?
- The display showing the illusionary perfect world died as Jules walked a certain distance but Bernard was still able to see what she saw. How come? The assumption was the wifi signal was too weak.
- How long has Silo17 been dead?
- Did someone cut the rope from Episode 1? If so, it likely wasn't Solo, he could barely walk across the platform. Who was it?
- Dr. Nichols will likely be caught, since he is being watched so closely. What purpose does this serve for the plot?
- Who is part of the ring of people that hacks the Silo's security network?
- Who was helping Jules escape by turning off the cameras at key opportune moments?
- What is the syndrome?
